The German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum aims to promote ongoing dialogue between Germany and Japan, to support German-Japanese cooperation, to contribute to fostering mutual relations and to build a network between young professionals from both countries. The program comprises a ten day summer school on a socio-political topic relevant to both countries, including visits of institutions and companies as well as a cultural program. It takes place annually, alternating between Germany and Japan, and is held in English.
The German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum 2016 was held from Friday, September 9th to Sunday, September 18th, 2016 in Germany (Potsdam and Berlin). The program with the topic "Digitalization and Data Security" covered the political, economic and social dimension of the benefits, opportunities and risks of an increasingly digitalized world in which technological progress seems to conflict directly with the need for security of personal data.
The German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum was established in 2006 in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Stiftung. The program is organized by the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) and funded by B. Metzler seel. Sohn & Co. in 2017. Basic expenditure during the Young Leaders Forum is met by the organizers (accommodation, meals, transport etc.). Allowances for travel costs can be granted on request. Since 2009, the program has been complemented by an alumni meeting, which gives current participants the opportunity to engage with members of previous cohorts.
The Young Leaders Forum addresses 16 young high potentials, eight German and eight Japanese nationals. They should be active in the fields of politics, economics, media or administration in private companies or public institutions. Participants are required to speak English fluently and should be between 25 and 35 years old.
Participants are mainly recruited upon recommendation by key persons from private companies and public institutions. Young Leaders who would like to actively apply for the program are invited to contact us for further details, also if they currently do not belong to a certain organization.
