Liane Birnberg uses printed letters as purely visual, graphic phenomena detached from semantics of any type. She has already been using this procedure in her book words from a foreign language (2006), which was developed in close cooperation with John Berger and gave the exhibition its title.
Her most recent works deal with the subject of the Japanese characters – letters become part of the graphic painting. John Berger’s poems as well as unpublished letters and drawings addressed to Liane Birnberg will supplement the exhibition with poetic depth. Thus, this exhibition is also a tribute to him.
