Through numerous initiatives for multilateral agreements, various stakeholders are trying to shape the new international economic frameworks: EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), One Belt One Road, Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The aspired standards of deregulation and legal protection are very different. Moreover, other stakeholders tend to oppose such multilateral agreements.
This symposium shall discuss emerging structures with a focus on the EU-Japan EPA. One issue that plays a major role here is the regulation of data transfer and data protection, which is a fundamental right in the EU. It is currently being examined whether – from the EU perspective – Japan has equivalent data protection rules or if separate agreements are necessary, as was the case with the USA. Both will have consequences and will require adaptation in legal, administrative and economic matters. A German-Japanese exchange could assist here.
