East Asia is on the path toward establishing itself as a global center of growth. In particular the rapid economic development of the PR China is creating in the long term a global counterweight that will strongly influence the policies of the EU and Japan. This development offers great economic and political opportunities if we can use them for integration and cooperation in the region. In view of the China’s enormous demand for energy coupled with its industrial growth, regional and international cooperation in this sector is required. In a world of growing inter-dependencies, energy security is very dependent on how nations manage their relations. Cooperation within this field plays an important role in the development of new strategies for securing energy security in Europe, Japan and East Asia. Energy policies and the development in northeast Asia are central issues of the German EU Council Presidency or of EU-Japan dialog. The conference shall examine perspectives for economic development of the region and market integration in view of existing virulent tensions, and with case study scenarios of a future-oriented energy policy for the region.
