The German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum aims to promote ongoing dialogue between Germany and Japan, to support German-Japanese cooperation, to contribute to fostering mutual relations and to build a network between young professionals from both countries. The program comprises a ten day summer school on a socio-political topic relevant to both countries, including visits of institutions and companies as well as a cultural program. It takes place annually, alternating between Germany and Japan, and is held in English.
The German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum 2017 was held from Friday, August 18 to Sunday, August 27, 2017 in Japan (Tokyo). This year’s program with the topic "Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs) covered the social, political and economic dimensions of the opportunities and challenges of these universal goals which are meant to mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change.
The German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum, established in 2006 in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Stiftung, is organized by the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) and was funded by B. Metzler seel. Sohn & Co in 2017. Basic expenditure during the Young Leaders Forum is met by the organizers (accommodation, meals, transport etc.). Allowances for travel costs can be granted on request. Since 2009, the program has been complemented by an alumni meeting, which gives current participants the opportunity to engage with members of previous cohorts.
The Young Leaders Forum addresses 16 young high potentials, eight German and eight Japanese nationals. They should be active in the fields of politics, economics, media or administration. Participants are required to speak English fluently and should be between 25 and 35 years old.
Participants are mainly recruited upon recommendation by key persons from private companies and public institutions. Young Leaders who would like to actively apply for the program are invited to contact us for further details, also if they currently do not belong to a certain organization.
