German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum – Summer School

German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum 2010 in Germany
Summer School on Nonproliferation and the Use of Nuclear Power

The joint program will be held in Berlin/Potsdam and other cities in Europe from June 26 to July 6, 2010. Japanese participants will come back to Japan on July 7.

The Young Leaders Forum addresses 16 young high potentials, of which 8 are Japanese and 8 are German nationals. They should be aged between 25 to 35 years and speak English fluently. Basic expenditure for the Young Leaders Forum will be met by the organizers (flight and travel, hotel, transport, meals).

This years summer school sets its focus on Nonproliferation and the use of nuclead power with the following issues to be discussed:
•    Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT): What changes / influences can be expected by the US government?
•    Conflict areas and regions: Middle East / North-East Asia (the role of North Korea)
•    Civil and military use of nuclear energy: how to assure peaceful use of nuclear energy?
•    Climate change and nuclear energy: Is nuclear energy necessary to reach CO2 and climate goals?
•    Attitude towards and use of nuclear power - differences in Germany and Japan

Thus, the program of the Young Leaders Forum 2010 covers security effects as well as the political, economic and ecological dimension of the use of nuclear power. Top level speakers from politics, business, and academia will explain their viewpoints. The Forum offers the opportunity to examine different interests and expectations. The situation in Japan and Germany will be reflected in its global context.

The program includes talks with political decision makers, visits to institutions and globally active institutions, for example a visit to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna) is envisaged. The Young Leaders Forum 2010 will be flanked by a meeting of alumni.
Applications should be based on a recommendation by a key person.

Application deadline is March 22, 2010!
