Speaking on, about and with Japan – 120 years of Japan-related research in Berlin
Panel Discussion and celebrations of the Japanisch-Deutsches Zentrum Berlin (JDZB) and the Berlin-Brandenburg Akademie der Wissenschaften -BBAW (Academy of sciences) to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Japan Studies in Berlin under the patronage of the Embassy of Japan on Monday, 15 October 2007, 3 to 8 pm at the BBAW.
What can a field of study dedicated to Japan contribute to the media age, the knowledge society and the much invoked transcultural dialog? Over the past 120 years have Japan Studies held dialogs not only on and about, but also with Japan? Is this discipline proficient in cultural translation?
A critical appraisal, but above all future perspectives will be the focus of a panel discussion commencing at 3 pm and including Japan specialists from German and international academic and research institutions. The event commemorates the 120th anniversary of Japan Studies in Berlin. Discussions will be chaired by Prof Irmela Hijiya-Kirschnereit (Chair for Literature and Cultural Studies of the East Asia Department of the FU Berlin).

In Tōkyō on August 30, Federal Chancellor Merkel met with participants of the Young Leaders Forum during her first official visit as head of the German government to Japan. Demographic change was the topic of this year’s forum, which was co-organized for the second time by the JDZB together with the Robert Bosch Foundation and held this year in Japan. The one-hour talk of the Chancellor with the 17 young leaders from Japan and Germany centered on this topic, because, according to the Chancellor, this development is of great significance to Germany as well.
