Symposium: From Dialog of Cultures to a Global Culture of Dialog? – Different Cultures as Factors of Conflict and Regional Cooperation

Both Japan and Germany have over the last years engaged themselves in regional and global conflicts: Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, to mention only the most prominent. In their mission both armed forces emphasized not only their role in law enforcement, but also their efforts in rebuilding a civil society. Japan has accompanied this process by organizing many conferences on dialogue of civilizations and Japan-Arab fora. In Germany with a relevant muslim minority, too, the dialogue with Islam generated many meetings and conferences. The similarities of the approach offer a chance for a comparative stock taking, an exchange on lessons learned and a discussion on how to cooperate on these issues in the future. The symposium will focus on the diversity of cultures and the role of religions as sources for conflict and factors of cooperation in the Near and Middle East and Southeast Asia. Presentations will survey the global and regional aspects of conflicts and look into ways to solve the problems and how Europe and Japan should participate in the dialogue of cultures and civilizations. The aim of the symposium is to identify policy approaches shared by Europe and Japan, which could support confidence building measures and preventive diplomacy. Languages of the conference will be English and Japanese, with simultaneous interpretation. The capacity of the hall is limited. Please send your registration not later than November 28.
