German-Japanese Workshop: Education for Sustainable Development in Geographical and Social Sciences in Japan and Germany
Date: 2008-08-19 - 2008-08-21
Venue: JDZB
Cooperation: Association of German Teachers of Geography, Berlin; Hiroshima Geographic Allicance of the Japanese Society for Geographical Sciences
The goal of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), for which UNESCO is the lead agency, is to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning. This educational effort will encourage changes in behaviour that will create a more sustainable future in terms of environmental integrity, economic viability, and a just society for present and future generations.
Japanese-German cooperation in this field of school education started in 2006 when a group of German teachers was invited to Japan by their Japanese colleagues. They visited schools and held a workshop in Hiroshima on introducing education for sustainable development in schools. The UNESCO office in Bangkok evaluated the project positively.
The dialog between Japan and Germany, two keyplayers in climate and environment protection, shall be continued this year by this symposium on German-Japanese Cooperation on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Berlin. The conference is jointly organized by the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB), the Association of German Teachers of Geography, the Hiroshima Geographic Allicance of the Japanese Society for Geographical Sciences in cooperation with the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and supported by The Japan Foundation.
The aims of the symposium are to discuss ways and methods to introduce education for sustainable development in school teaching and learning, develop curriculums and teaching material to be used in schools in Germany, Japan and other countries and to foster exchange of teachers between Germany and Japan.
