This international symposium is hosted by The Japan Foundation (Tôkyô), the Martin-Gropius-Bau (Berlin). the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) and the Department of East Asian Art History of Free University Berlin.

Accompanying the comprehensive retrospective exhibition on the eminent Japanese artist Katsushika HOKUSAI (1760-1849) that will take place from August 26th to October 31st, 2011, at the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin.
The international symposium "Hokusai in Context" will throw light upon not only important aspects of the artistic work of Hokusai, but discuss also the historical context as well as the adoption of the artist in different times and cultures. The conference will bring together prominent scholars on the art of Hokusai as well as leading experts on the art of the Edo period. Subjects of these renowned speakers promise an intense and innovative discourse on Hokusai.
Participating scholars include Prof. Matthi Forrer (Leiden University ), Dr. John Carpenter (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), Prof. SHIMIZU Yoshiaki (Princeton University), Prof. INAGA Shigemi (Nichibunken, Kyôto), Prof. NAITÔ Masato (Keiô University, Tôkyô), Prof. Franziska Ehmcke (University of Cologne), Dr. Ewa Machotka (Leiden University ), Dr. Noriko Brandl (University of Vienna), Prof. Evgeny Steiner (SOAS, London), Dr. Christine Guth (Royal College of Art, London) and Prof.Roger Keyes.
The symposium aims at the general public as well as specialists of the field.
The conference language will be English.

There will be no charge for audience participation, but registration is requisite. Within the course of the symposium, a guided tour through the exhibition “Hokusai” is provided.
