“The Public Pool” (2002) and “Sentô – the Japanese Bath House” (2005)

badeanstalt (baier)The photo series “The Public Pool” (from 2002) shows pictures of public swimming pools in Germany. The series was awarded with the BFF Award for Young Talents in 2003.

2In 2005 the series was continued in Japan. Julia Baier worked on a series of photos depicting Japanese bath houses, in particular “Sentô”, the traditional Japanese bath houses.

sentô (baier)Both black and white photo series are now being displayed at the Japanese-German Center Berlin.
Both series focus on the narrative presentation of people bathing as well as the depiction of locations. These places are at the same time a public domain but also venues for privacy.
By placing the series alongside each other we can clearly see the differences emerging between Asian and European bathing cultures.
