This panel discussion will look at the current cross-border movement of young people for the protection of the climate.
In September 2019, young people around the world organized protests online as well as in cities around the world to raise awareness of pressing climate change issues. Europe and the United States have become central to this movement, but groups ranging from “Fridays for Future” to “Climate Extinction” are represented around the world, including in Japan.
Based on this global movement of ideas, slogans and strategies, this event will discuss how a political culture of youth can cross borders in many ways. Rhetoric, tactics and reception should also be compared to understand what this “global” movement actually does for global climate change.
