In the EU’s Lisboa Treaty “social market economy”, the leading idea of the German economic policy, is mentioned as one of the Unions’ principles. “Social market economy” means, that on the one hand side a fair set of rules is created for a free market and competition, on the other hand side the government guarantees social security, when the market alone fails to do so.
The opinion that “neoliberalism” went to far and therefore markets run out of control can also be heard in Europe. The EU aims to realize the idea of a social market economy as precisely as possible and to the greatest possible extent, in order to guarantee a balance between free competition and a social security net and to adjust to a globalised economy at the same time.
The globalisation of the economy effects Japan too, that also has to deal with difficult tasks like adjusting to demographic change and the recovery of the economy.
Therefore the three organizers will hold the symposium “The Social Market Economy in Europe and its Implications for Japanese Business”. Japanese and German experts will discuss the present situation and the challenges for the Japanese and European market economy. They will also exchange their opinions about the balance between a free market and the social security net and discuss possible ways to deal with the challenges in both countries.
