This international forum shall be held in the new museum complex “Jômon Center” located near the city of Hakodate on the occasion of its inauguration and celebrations for the 150th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Germany and Japan. The German Archaeological Institute, Berlin, and the Hakodate City Archaeological Organization signed an agreement of cooperation in 2008 and since then sought to familiarize themselves with the other’s research areas and methods. This is the only long-term Japanese-German cooperation in the field of archaeological palaeo-climatic research and the conservation of archaeological cultural heritage.
Already in 2004 the JDZB organized in a similar vein a large exhibition about archaeology in Japan and finished with a conference. This event is regarded by both sides as a starting point for long-term collaborative efforts that shall incorporate archaeological excavations, analyses of discoveries, presentation of objects in museums and promoting young researchers, as well as publications in various areas. 16 speakers (eight from Japan) will be invited to this two-day forum in 2011 to provide comparative perspectives on issues related to the development of settlements, animal and plant domestication, climatic and natural environmental frameworks as well as religion in Europe, the Middle East, China and Japan.
