Conference: EU-Japan Cooperation in Science and Innovation

FOCAL AREA: EU/G8 PRESIDENCY, GLOBAL QUESTIONS
Date: 2007-06-15
Venue: Milano
Cooperation: European Japan Experts Association; University of Mailand

In a speech at Kobe University in April 2006 the President of the European Commission, Barroso, stressed that Japan and the EU “need to give our relationship a new dimension – knowledge cooperation.” And he elaborated: “establishing networks: to put this enhanced knowledge cooperation into practice we need to adapt it to a knowledge-based economy and society. We need more focused and intensified cooperation between our universities, businesses, research institutions, funding institutions and public administrations. We need to better produce, transmit and exploit knowledge, translating it into economically successful applications, products and services. And, we need to mobilise and coordinate our public policies to optimise the conditions for our knowledge economy, i.e. intellectual property rights, standardisation, taxation and product regulations.”

Cooperation in science and technology is high on the political EU-Japan agenda, but also of growing importance for European industry, that is evaluating Japan as partner and location for research, technology development and innovation.

Against this background, the European Japan Experts Association (EJEA), the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) and the Contemporary Asia Research Center at Milan University are jointly organizing this conference. Academics, decision makers, business representatives from the European Union and Commission, various European countries and Japan will discuss what has been achieved and what are the prospects for EU-Japan cooperation in science, technology and innovation. The objective is to identify options for EU-Japan cooperation in a changing global environment for research and innovation.

Language of the conference: English.
