For many years now the JDZB has dealt with Japan's youth culture which has grown beyond the boundaries of sub-culture and has become widely accepted in the meantime. In a series of conferences and workshops that commenced with the symposium "Subculture – Popculture made in Japan" in November 2005, and which will be continued with the workshop "Cool Japan – Image Exports, Globalization, Intercultural Encounters," these phenomena will be examined from a social and cultural perspective. The first conference looked at how far Japanese pop culture had spread beyond national and cultural boundaries and which processes were used. Now, also from a Japan Studies perspective, various foci of these phenomena in film, media culture and in the various manga genres shall be examined.
Conference language will be German.
