In 2019, Japan will host the G20 summit for the first time, and artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation will be discussed among world leaders at the summit at the end of June. Both Germany and Japan have made artificial intelligence (AI) strategies a high priority in research and development as well as on their political agendas due to the changes that AI may bring to social and industrial structures. Germany and Japan have an interest in a level playing field with other major international players. As democratic and liberal countries that have shared values and consistently defend and promote multilateralism and a rules-based international order, Germany and Japan play an important role in promoting principles and guidelines regarding the benefits and risks of AI.
During the symposium, the implications of AI for our industries, economies, societies and politics will be discussed from German and Japanese perspectives and its impact for new technologies will be assessed. The program will include discussions on ethical questions, such as how and to what extent AI can be beneficial for a human-centered society as well as approaches to international standardization. Opportunities to strengthen German/European-Japanese cooperation in the field of AI and its regulations will be considered by various groups of stakeholders and experts from politics, industry, academia and research.
